Coming to school at Stephen S. Wise Elementary really is a family affair, and we often include all members of our family in the educational process. The first grade has been studying community workers, and each class has had the privilege of visiting guest speakers to teach us about their job. Students really light up when their mom or dad comes in to the classroom and shares the tools of their profession, the education they needed to get that job, why they chose their line of work, and what their favorite part of the job is. As the visiting lectures have progressed we are learning some common themes. One of the biggest lessons is that no matter what the job is – artist, chef, architect – the idea of teamwork and working with other people is so important. This directly ties into the Judaic values that they students are currently studying. Other key learnings have been how important it is to practice at something when it is really hard and how important it is to ask for help when you need it. Our first grade students are walking away with a great sense of understanding that our community goes beyond the classroom and school walls to include our houses and the larger world. Thank you to all of the parents who have taken time out of their busy work schedules to join us.
