“If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” Rachel Carson, The Sense of Wonder
Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year! As the above quote mentions, we as adults have the privilege and responsibility of opening up the awesome world to our children. You’ve now had them for the past two months, and we are excited to take that baton from you and carry it forward into an amazing year of learning and growth.
The month of August and beginning of a school year has a great energy to it, and I can’t wait to see you and your children in a few short weeks. We are busy in the office preparing for a successful start, our maintenance crew is cleaning and painting the campus, and our administrative team is putting together class lists, working on our curriculum and planning an inspirational week of professional development for our teachers. You will be receiving further information from me in the next two weeks via email, and your class placement will be mailed the week of August 22.
I have some very exciting news to share with you: Stephen S. Wise Elementary School has been approved to enter into a partnership with the USC Rossier School of Education as a model school for gifted education! This means that we will be working with Dr. Sandra Kaplan and her outstanding team of doctoral candidates as they provide us with an academically rigorous, research-based curriculum for all students at all grade levels. We have also hired a gifted coordinator, Susan Bagdasarian, who will interface with the USC team and our staff and parents. Dr. Kaplan will be coming to meet all parents on the first day of school, August 29th, at our Parent Education Conference at 8:00 a.m. and I highly encourage you to join us to hear about our vision for the upcoming school year.
In addition to Dr. Sandra Kaplan, I am so pleased to have Dr. Daniel Siegel as the key-note speaker at our Parent Education Conference. Dr. Siegel has written many books in the area of child development and personal growth, including Parenting from the Inside Out, Mindsight, and his upcoming release in October of The Whole-Brain Child. The Parent Conference this year will truly be an opportunity for you to add to your adult learning on the first day that your children begin their learning journey, and I hope you will be at this important event.
I will see all of you on Sunday, August 28th at 3:00 p.m. on Faber Field for our Back to Wise Event where you will reconnect with old friends and meet new families, get to introduce yourself to your teachers, and celebrate the kick-off of a great new year!
