Today is was wonderful to be a part of our second grade students sharing their global knowledge at the Multicultural Celebration. Students have spent the past few months learning about the culture, history, geography, food, currency and much more from China, Kenya and Brazil. Through their work in Project Studio, the classrooms, and the music room they have enriched their knowledge with high level thinking, writing, technology, singing and dance. The culmination of this work was amazing to see as they performed songs in many languages, and expertly played the recorder, danced the Samba, and moved to the beat of African drums. Our Social Studies curriculum builds on the idea of what it means to be part of a community and community workers in first grade, learning about the larger world community in second grade, and then focusing specifically on Los Angeles for third grade. Students learn through text study, research skills, field trips and culminating performances how important community is, and ultimately how they add to our Stephen S. Wise community. I want to congratulate the second graders, and all the teachers and students, for a job well done in making this learning come alive this year.
