One of the things I truly love about our school is that important learning happens throughout the day and throughout our campus. Many of our lessons take place in the classrooms, but often I witness academic exploration and discovery in different and innovate places. This week our students took their Science lesson outside to the Temple garden. In this picture you can see first graders spraying natural pesticide made from garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper powder they dissolved in water. The students are learning about plants and the growing cycle, and are hoping to deter aphids, rabbits, and other garden nibblers with this work. Even in an urban setting we are surrounded by the beauty of nature – one morning this fall there were deer footprints in the garden! While our colleagues in day schools on the East coast are sitting in snow and ice, we are so fortunate to have these brilliant days filled with sunshine, and I enjoy watching our students taking advantage of our Southern California climate every day.
