As you drive up our driveway you may have noticed a new banner – the thermometer registering our progress towards our Annual Giving goal. For the 2012-2013 school year we have a goal of $300,000 and we are well on our way to achieving this target. Next week you will also see stars on the fence of Baron Field with the name of each family that has participated in our campaign with the important message of "Hineini – We answered the call." We are truly hoping for 100% participation in this year's fundraising goal, and if you have already given I want you to know how much it is appreciated by every student, teacher and administrator. Your gifts directly support our partnership with the USC Rossier School of Education, our Friday sports clinics and athletics, our fine art and visual art programs, our purchase of new iPads and technology, and so much more. We can't rely on tuition alone to run our outstanding educational program, and we also use these funds to contribute to financial aid for those students who would not otherwise be able to attend Stephen S. Wise Elementary School. It is very easy for you to give to the campaign this year: you can simply go to our website to the giving tab, or come into the main office to pick up an envelope. If you haven't already given, you will be receiving a phone call from one of our campaign chairs, and you can also make a pledge over the phone. Thank you for being part of our team and helping us realize our dreams!

Welcome back and Happy New Year! It was wonderful seeing your children’s smiling faces on Monday morning, and I actually think some of them grew over the two week break! We’re back in full swing here with rigorous classroom lessons, the kick-off of our winter sports season, Little Mermaid rehearsals, cheerleading jumps, and so much more. As I am walking around the campus I’m reminded of the tremendous sense of community we have at Stephen S. Wise Elementary School. In the next couple of weeks you will have an opportunity to continue building that community with many exciting parent events. Please be on the lookout for information about the Sushi party at the Umansky home and our upcoming Spring Parties for kids and adults. I truly hope you RSVP and plan on attending these events, as they are a great opportunity to get to know one another.

I wish you and your family a very happy and healthy 2013!

This week many of our classes expanded their learning by leaving the walls of Stephen S. Wise Elementary School and using the city of Los Angeles as their classroom. Our Fifth Grade students went to the Reagan Museum where their knowledge of U.S. history really came alive. They loved seeing Air Force One, were very interested in the many roles that Ronald Reagan played in California and the United States, and found the Christmas Tree exhibit fascinating as it showed decades of American history through this icon. The very same day our Third Grade classes went to downtown LA, where they learned about the history of Los Angeles by taking a docent-led tour through The Avilla Adobe (the oldest house in LA), the first firehouse, and the plaza. The day culminated with an exciting scavenger hunt through the Olvera Street Market. A different kind of field trip happened on Tuesday when our 1st – 3rd Grade Chorus went to the Jewish Home to share Hanukkah music with the residents. The kids sang, danced, and spread their light and joy to a large audience, and brought together their love of music with their love of doing good deeds in the world. Once again, another full and fulfilling week at school!

As we prepare for our winter break I want to wish all of you a wonderful two weeks, with lots of fun family time, and a happy New Year!

See you at the Monday morning carpool on January 7th,

The lights of Hanukkah are shining brightly throughout our school this week. In each class the students are learning the story of the holiday, and there have been great discussions around bravery, miracles, and giving. On a higher level, we are connecting Hanukkah messages to our work with USC on relationships, power, adaptation, change and conflict. These lessons have added a new layer to our understanding of the holiday and it is exciting to witness this learning every day. I have truly enjoyed being in the classrooms with the kids, and at this point I can’t eat another latke or donut ever again (until next year)! Another highlight of the week has been our donations to Light Up Literacy, where we have linked Hanukkah with the importance of Tzedakah, and today we are presenting the organization with a check for $2,500! Our students created a wonderful video that I hope you will watch at by clicking here.

On another note, I am truly excited that our Annual Giving Campaign is kicking off with great energy. We have had some very generous early donations and are on our way to reaching our overall goal of $300,000. It is extremely important this year that we have 100% participation from every family and staff member, and I am personally asking all of you to make a gift that is meaningful to you. You can access information about annual giving by clicking here – make sure to watch the great video by Rabbi Yoshi. I want to thank you for your support of this important program.

Hag Sameah,
