SAVE THE DATE! We are excited to present our parent night with Dr. Sandra Kaplan from the USC Rossier School of Education on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00 p.m. As you see in the picture above, all of our students in 2nd – 6th grade are busy working on depth and complexity, thinking like a disciplinarian, and different types of questioning. It has been a very intense first semester as we are taking a hard look at our curriculum and finding ways to challenge our students to make important learning connections. Dr. Kaplan works consistently with the teachers and administration on concepts of how to present enduring understandings and big ideas throughout our curriculum, and the hallways and bulletin boards contain snapshots of this new thinking. You will be receiving an invitation next week to join us for an informative evening where parents can experience this new learning, and I truly hope that all mothers and fathers can clear their calendars and join us in this important conversation.

B’Shalom,
Tami Weiser

Throughout the school day our students are engaged in high level learning in a variety of settings. Through their differentiated classes in reading, math and Hebrew they are working together on specific academic projects. In their integrated studies they are focusing on writing, vocabulary and Social Studies. Another important part of our students’ day is their work with the specialists. We are so fortunate to have the amazingly talented teachers in Science, Technology, Project Studio, Art, Music, Library and PE. These classes enrich the students’ understanding of content with hands on activities that integrate with the learning they are doing in their general education classes. This month our newsletter features highlights from each specialist program, and I encourage you to click on the links and find out specific details about each class.

B’Shalom,

“Oh Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah come light the menorah….” The hallways of Stephen S. Wise Elementary are filled with the sounds of students preparing for the holiday of Hanukhah. Last night we were treated with the joyful singing of the first and second grade choir and Mrs. Jeser’s fun-filled concert. In addition, our students have been singing for the ECC, the Beverly Hills chapter of Hadassah, the Westfield Mall and today they will bring their energy to the Jewish Home for the Aging. Added to the singing are classroom activities around the history of the holiday (including an interesting link to the work we are doing with USC on the big idea of change and conflict in 6th grade), learning the blessings, and of course, eating the delicious latkes and sufganiyot.

As we prepare for a well-deserved vacation I want to wish everyone a wonderful Hanukkah holiday and a happy and healthy New Year!

B’Shalom,
Tami Weiser
