David Kates is a BAFTA nominated composer, arranger, and conductor. He composes original music for film, television, and video games. He is an accomplished pianist, choral conductor, and educator in Jazz theory and harmony, lecturing graduate film students in the art of film music at The Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, California.
As a composer for video games, David composed original music for the highly successful franchises MASS EFFECT and MASS EFFECT 2 (Bioware). His orchestral arrangement, TRON SUITE based on Wendy Carlos’ provocative Sci-Fi score has been performed by orchestras around the world as part of the groundbreaking concert series VIDEO GAMES LIVE, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at The Hollywood Bowl.
A graduate of the Wexner Heritage Foundation, David composed a collection of Jewish life cycle songs with his writing partner Julie Silver, along with his own publication, “Shirei Chayim” published by the Cantor’s Assembly. He has produced numerous Jewish albums and performed in concert with Craig Taubman, Debbie Friedman, Julie Silver, Theodore Bikel, and Rabbi Joe Black.
This fall, David began his tenure as Music Director of Stephen S. Wise Temple, working alongside Cantor Nathan Lam. He also assumed the title of Director of Music Innovation working with the Temple’s Elementary School having created and designed a new music curriculum and state of the art music lab.
David is married to Cantor Linda Kates of Leo Baeck Temple. Their children Bria and Chloe, and Cocker Spaniel Morgan, who they rescued a year ago, are the light of their hearts.
