The social studies program engages students in an understanding of history and the world around them. Our unique units of study build upon each other, as students learn about their community, the city of Los Angeles, the State of California, the United States, and finally, about ancient civilizations.
In the early grades, children learn about themselves in relationship to their immediate surroundings. As children progress through our School, they expand their appreciation of the interrelatedness between people, place, and time in history. The curriculum allows students to acquire specific knowledge of history and geography, as well as cultural understandings and critical thinking skills. Students learn their rights and responsibilities as citizens of a democracy. They learn to appreciate the balance that must be maintained between expressing themselves as individuals and fulfilling their responsibilities as members of the community. This balance is reinforced as our students study about their history as Americans and as Jews.
