Spring is in the air! Kindergarten students have been studying an all-encompassing unit about spring and the changes that take place during this season. This month we also recognized Earth Day. We read books about taking care of the earth and discussed what we can do to help our environment. We had some fantastic ideas, and realized how much we are doing already as 5 and 6 year olds to help the environment! In Language Arts, students are reading and writing stories about spring. We wrote spring books about using our 5 senses. The weather is warming, flowers are blooming, we hear the birds chirping and we can taste the wonderful foods on the BBQ.
In science, we have been exploring plants and growing seeds in our classrooms and on the Kindergarten yard. Students made predictions about what might happen and are carefully watching and recording observations. We are even bringing spring into the computer lab! Students made pictures and wrote about flowers using KidPix and Pixie. We can’t wait to share all that we are learning at our upcoming Open House on May 24th.
In Math, we are “counting on” using “ten frames” and we are becoming experts at it. We can count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s now, too! Students are learning about solid and plane shapes, and playing many games observing shapes around the classroom. We have been practicing our adding and subtracting skills and applying them to word problems.
In preparation for Yom Ha’atzma-ut, Israel’s birthday, the students made their very own Kovah Temble hat, Israeli flag and the emblem of Israel. Other activities centered around our study of Israel included learning about a few beautiful places in Israel that have special meaning. To top it all off we went on a few side trips in Israel. The students visited the places they learned about and documented their travels in their very own “Israeli passport.” We also celebrated Israel’s Birthday together as an entire school. We sang and danced in honor of our Jewish homeland on its 64th birthday.
• Help your kindergartner count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
• Take a walk through nature with your kindergartner and keep an eye open for the beauty in the world.
• As a family, discuss ways you can help the environment.
